Appeal For A Sponsor
Could you sponsor a bright but impoverished student through her final 2 years of university?
Kwamrudee is a 20 year-old public health student at Ubon Ratchathani University and is currently halfway through a 4-year course. She approached the Anglo-Thai Foundation this year because she is struggling to cope with her tuition fees.
Originally from Nakhon Pathom, Kwanrudee is the eldest of 3 daughters (the others are 16 and 10 years old) born to poor rice farmer parents. They own half an acre of land which does not provide enough rice for the family to live on. She is a bright and talented student and her first 2 years of university were partly funded by her own teachers and the head monk from her village where she often helps out during her school holidays. She has also had to take out an education loan from the government. She must work during her school holidays, recycling plastic bottles and then selling them on. She often walks for miles alongside the rubbish truck as it drives through villages and picks up what she can along the way. On a good week she can make up to 500 Baht (just over £10). She also grows and sells vegetables from the family’s small plot of land but this doesn’t bring in very much. Her 82 year-old grandmother lives with the family and her parents often go away to work as fruit pickers leaving Kwamrudee to look after the rest of the family. Her mother was in an accident last month and sustained a bad head injury leaving her unable to do much work.
Kwamrudee is very keen to complete her education and start work at a hospital or government post. She not only must find the university tuition fees but also her own living expenses and contribute to those of her family. The Anglo-Thai Foundation decided to give her a Hardship Grant of 5,000 Baht (just over £100) to help with her immediate expenses but
WE NEED TO FIND A SPONSOR WHO CAN COMMIT TO 20,000 BAHT (ABOUT £450) PER YEAR FOR 2 YEARS TO ENSURE KWAMRUDEE CAN FINISH HER EDUCATION.
Can you help her? A very bright student is desperate to realise her dream- to graduate and then to return to her community to work in public heath. If you can, please contact us at
